We are Physical Therapists from SMI (Sports Medicine Institute) in Orange with expertise and years of experience treating athletes and active adults. After years in the field, we have seen that it is essential for every athlete, youth to professional level, to have an individualized, comprehensive pre-rehabilitation program that addresses specific weaknesses in order to decrease injury rates.
Joan Boesel | PT, DPT
Owner & Founder of SMI
Joan Boesel is the owner of Sports Medicine Institute with over 30 years of experience in the field of sports medicine, orthopedic physical therapy, and athletic performance. She has successfully treated world class and professional athletes from a variety of organizations including the MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS, AVP, FIVB, USOC, NBA, Major Professional Tennis Championships, as well as collegiate, high school and youth athletes. Joan specializes in injuries of the shoulder and elbow joints in the overhead athlete, developing a comprehensive rehabilitation protocol including return to throwing program to meet the athlete's specific needs. Joan was a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist and a graduate of the Ola Grimsby Institute for Manual Therapy. Joan was a member of the Oregon State University Women's Softball Team.
Ashley Rojan | PT, DPT, ATC

Ashley Rojan has over a decade of experience in Athletic Training and Physical Therapy. She has treated many athletes from high school to professional levels from organizations including MLB, WNBA, USDA, AVP, MLS, Liga Femenina de Baloncesto and NCAA Division I, II & III. Ashley specializes in injuries of the shoulder and elbow joints in the overhead athlete, as well as hip and knee injuries. Ashley also has extensive knowledge in movement analysis and biomechanics in order to develop a specific and comprehensive rehabilitation protocol to meet the athlete's specific needs for their injury and sport. In addition, she trained in Manual Therapy, Myofascial Decompression, Functional Movement Screen, Selective Functional Movement Assessment and is Y-Balance Certified.
Taylor Morris PT, DPT

Taylor Morris is a graduate from Baylor University DPT program, and is passionate about helping patients of all populations on their journey to becoming healthier versions of themselves. She has experience working with athletes of all ages- from youth to post college over the last 5 years. She has also worked extensively with the older population in inpatient and outpatient settings to rehabilitate post-operative and neurologic conditions. Taylor is experienced with injuries of the shoulder and elbow, as well as cervical and lumbar spine and lower body. She has been educated by manual therapy specialists in soft tissue and joint mobilizations, as well as movement analysis and biomechanics. Taylor also has many years of strength and conditioning experience as a Division I athlete, as well as formal training in technique.
